I am a graduate student, pursuing a late life doctoral degree, and was asked to pick a demographic population of my choice and write about it. Of course, I chose baby boomers, thinking there might be something about us boomers that I have either yet to experience or was unaware of.
Some of the facts that I learned are rather startling. Statistically, baby boomers are blowing the top off of the divorce rates. Divorce rates for boomers have out stripped all other age groups. We are cohabiting more than those who went before us and catching up to the rates of those young folks coming behind us.
Now, one other fact that stopped me in my tracks. Baby boomers include all those persons born between 1946 and 1964, a group that now numbers around 74 million. And, based on our birth year, the statisticians can say with certainty that a whole lot of us will be dead within the next 20 to 30 years. I mean, I know we all gotta go sometime, but to see a number attached to my name, well, that was eye opening.
I don’t bring this up to be morbid. I open this subject up for discussion to remind you that we all have a limited amount of time to make a difference.
The baby boomer cohort has a wealth of knowledge that the world needs. And, unfortunately, it is the one thing you CAN take with you. We are in a unique position in that we have more disposable income than our parents had and we are more educated. We have traveled more and own more stuff.
This is not to say that those who are younger or older don’t have something to contribute. For as the Bible says, no one knows the time or the hour, that your clock gonna stop ticking, my paraphrasing….
Boomer wisdom would like to encourage you to stop wasting time and start giving your time to a worthy cause. Read books to the children at the library. Stop in at the local school and volunteer to eat lunch with an at risk kid. Help a fledgling non-profit in your area, give freely of your expertise.
Because when the bell tolls for you, everything in you that could help someone should be all emptied out for the good of those who needed what you had to offer.
Blessings and long productive lives. May the force be with you as you live long and prosper to help others.
